kaija siirala | ABOUT
I work in documentary media as a picture editor, sound designer and educator. I have a keen interest in process-based collaboration and storytelling that pushes against the bounds of classical narrative structures.Films I’ve worked on have screened at the National Gallery of Canada, True/False Film Festival, Camden International Film Festival, MoMI First Look, Hot Docs, DOC NYC, Big Sky, AFI fest, IDFA, DOK Leipzig, Flaherty Seminar 2023 and as a New York Times Op-Doc. Audio pieces I’ve worked on have been part of BBC Radio 4’s Short Cuts, On Air Festival, constellations podcast, and in installation contexts in both Toronto and Guelph. I have explored live video mixing in a number of performance contexts including dance, theatre, and music. I was a member-in-residence of the Meerkat Media Collective in Brooklyn, NY from 2016-2018, a production studio and self-run collective of media makers who support one another’s work while practicing consensus decision making. I’ve been an educator for the past nine years in various contexts. In May 2018, I completed my MFA in Integrated Media Arts at Hunter College (CUNY) and I’m now based in Hamilton, ON.
